The largest of the Forestry Commission's woodlands within Thames Chase, consisting of two former farms sloping down towards the River Ingrebourne, which is a substantial stream at this point.
At the southern end, the grazing meadows of the former Mount Pleasant Farm have been left in their original state and are rich in flowers and insects.
The former Pages Farm has been planted with groups of trees, separated by broad grassy rides and open glades.
The combination of maturing woodland with open, sunny grassland and the river makes it a good area for birds at almost any time of the year. In summer, banded demoiselles can be seen along the river and a variety of butterflies and other insects in the grassland.
Visiting
Within the triangle formed by the A127, A12 and M25 east of Harold Wood. Heading west on the A127, turn off at the first junction after the M25 and head north along Hall Lane towards Brentwood: the Pcar park is on the left. SatNav: RM14 1TQ.
Harold Wood station is about 20 minutes' walk via Harold Wood Park.
Accessible at all times. Car parks open dawn to dusk.
May for breeding birds; high summer for wild flowers and insects.
